Choosing an E Cigarette – 5 Things You Need to Consider
Knowing all there is to know about different types of e cigarettes that are available on the market is great, but this still doesn’t get you any closer to making a buying decision. There are several different factors you need to consider when choosing an e cigarette – by itself, none of these will have a huge impact on your decision but put them together and you should have a pretty clear picture of what you’re looking for.
Five general things to consider when choosing an e cigarette are:
- Ease of use
- Your budget
- Is Ease of Use Really Important?
Short answer: Yes.
I would dare say that it’s one of the most important factors you’re going to consider when choosing an e cigarette. For one, most people are turned off by seemingly endless complications of using electronic cigarettes. High-end devices offer a lot in terms of customization but they also have a rather steep learning curve, especially if you’re new to vaping.
The easiest devices to use are definitely disposable electronic cigarettes. You use them as you would use regular cigarettes and, once they are empty, you simply dispose of them. A close second are rechargeable cigalike devices. Again, you use them in the same way as cigarettes but once the flavour is gone you simply unscrew the cartridge and replace it with a new one.
Vape pens such as Kanger SubVod are more hands on – you have to refill it regularly and replace the atomizer (the bit that vapourizes the the e liquid) once the cotton becomes too dirty and starts affecting the flavour. Things can get even more complicated than that – Alien 220W is a box mod and is geared toward more experienced users. Box mods are slightly more complicated devices that allow users to control output and, generally, require a bit more tinkering. However, they are rewarding as flavour and vapour are much better with them. Plus, they are more efficient in delivering nicotine to your body.
When it comes to ease of use, the most important question is: are you committed and do you want to become a power user? If the answer is yes then a slightly steeper learning curve for vape pen and mods will not be able to deter you. If the answer is no, however, you are better off sticking with disposables and rechargeable cigalikes.
Considering Your Budget
How much money you’re willing to spend on vaping is also a valid point that needs to be considered. In the long run, vaping will save you money, especially if you venture out into the area of making your own coils and e liquids, further reducing your costs. However, initial costs are still higher than running out and buying a pack of cigarettes. Slightly more elaborate setups require you to buy a battery, a tank, a charger, vape juices, and a couple of more things – easily a £100 investment in the beginning.
On the other hand, a light UK smoker (smoking 1 pack a day) will spend around £70 on cigarettes each week. When you look at it from that angle, spending £100 at once to get a decent vaping kit doesn’t seem all that bad. Keeping in mind that (if you switch to vaping completely) you’ll be spending up to £30 weekly on vape juices, the savings math is clearly in your corner.
Of course, there’s no need to go out and buy a £100 setup immediately. If you’re unsure about vaping and just want to give it a try just buy a £10 cigalike or an affordable vape pen – see how you like it and whether or not it’s something that could replace your smoking habit.
What About the Looks?
Believe it or not, aesthetics really do come into play here. This points hinges entirely on personal preference, however, as no vaping device is better than the other just because of the way it looks. Some people want devices that are similar to analog cigarettes because it helps them to recreate the feeling of ‘smoking’ – they usually go with cigalikes or vape pens. Others want to distance themselves as much as possible from regular cigarettes so they choose weirdly designed vape pens and box mods.
A Brief Note on Effectiveness and Functionality
Effectiveness and functionality have to do with flavour, vapour production, and nicotine delivery. Some devices and setups deliver more flavour and vapour than others (high-end pen vapes and box mods) while others, like disposables, struggle in that area. As you move forward and learn more about vaping, there’s a good chance that flavour and vapour will become more and more important to you and that this will necessitate a switch to more elaborate e cigarettes and setups. As for nicotine, all vaping devices deliver it (depending, of course, on the type and the strength of e liquid in use). Some devices are better at it than others. Unlike cigalikes, vape pens and box mods create more vapour and are generally considered much more efficient when it comes to nicotine delivery.
Are You an Out and Proud Vaper?
Another consideration for beginner vapers is whether or not they want to advertise to the world they are vaping. This might not seem like a big deal but considering the fact that a good number of people considers vaping to be at least as harmful as smoking, you need to give it some thought. While, technically, we’re still allowed to vape pretty much everywhere (restaurants, bars, at work) if you want to be considerate of other people you need to think about stealth vaping.
Stealth vaping means making sure that the e cigarette you’ve chosen does not produce huge plumes of vapour. If you’re into stealth vaping then box mods are a bad idea – they can potentially produce huge clouds. On the other hand, cigalikes and some specialty vape pens produce very little visible vapour – you’ll want to stick with these, at least until you’re vaping in the warm confines of your own home.
Choosing an e cigarette that’s right for you can be a lengthy process, as you can see. There are several things to consider and keep in mind when making your decision. However, the most important thing to consider is what you want out of an e cigarette – something that completely replaces your analog cigarette consumption, a way to quench your nicotine thirst when you can’t smoke, exploring a great new vaping flavour, or something else. Once you decide on that, choosing an e cigarette will be easy and you’ll be glad you’ve invested time into learning more about what makes them tick!
E cigarettes shouldn’t be an impulse buy. Research, contemplate, compare – and only then click that buy button!
